Indications

Tolfenamic acid is used to treat migraine headaches and is also recommended for use as an analgesic in the treatment of post-operative pain and fever.

 

Pharmacology

Absorption is a pharmacokinetic property. The GI tract absorbs it quickly. 60-90 minutes for a peak plasma concentration. 85 percent bioavailability Protein-binding is 99 percent of the time. Half-life in plasma is 2 hours. Metabolism: The liver is the site of metabolization. Enterohepatic circulation transports tolfenamic acid. Excretion: Excreted primarily in urine (90%) and on the faces.

 

Administration & Dosage

Two hours is the plasma half-life. The liver is the site of metabolization. Enterohepatic circulation carries tolfenamic acid. Excretion: 90% of the time, it is excreted in the urine and on the faces.

 

Interaction

Tolfenamic acid absorption is increased by Metoclopramide and Magnesium hydroxide, but it is decreased by Aluminium hydroxide. When anticoagulants and other NSAIDS are combined with Tolfenamic acid, the risk of bleeding increases. Antihypertensive response to loop diuretics, B-blockers, and ACE inhibitors is decreased. Lithium Methotrexate plasma concentration rises after co-administration.

 

Contraindications

A peptic ulcer that is active or bleeding in the intestines. Heart, kidney, or liver failure is severe.

 

Side Effect

Diarrhoea, nausea, epigastric pain, vomiting, dyspepsia, erythema, headache, tremor, euphoria, fatigue, pulmonary infiltration, and haematuria, especially in men. Blood dyscrasias and hepatitis are both potentially fatal.

 

Pregnancy & Lactation

This medicine should not be used during pregnancy unless it is deemed necessary by your doctor. It is not recommended for use during the third trimester of pregnancy. NSAIDs can be found in very low concentrations in breast milk. If at all possible, NSAIDs should be avoided while breastfeeding.

 

Precautions & Warnings

Patients with asthma, bronchospasm, bleeding disorders, cardiovascular diseases, peptic ulceration, hypertension, liver infection, cardiac or renal function impairment, or the elderly should exercise caution. To reduce dysuria, increase your water intake or reduce your dose.

 

Therapeutic Class

Rheumatoid arthritis medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and other migraine medications.
