This product has a minimum quantity of 10

Indications

This is recommended for the treatment and prevention of iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiencies, particularly during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Pharmacology

Iron, an important component of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and other enzymes, is replenished by ferrous sulfate. It takes the place of iron, which is normally present in hemoglobin and myoglobin. Iron helps in oxygen transport and storage, electron transport and energy metabolism, antioxidant and pro-oxidant activities, oxygen sensing, tissue proliferation and growth, and DNA replication and repair.

Dosage & Administration

Adult or Elderly: 1 capsule daily. In more severe cases, 2 capsules daily may be required.

Children: Aged over 1 year: 1 capsule daily. The capsule may be opened and the pellets to be mixed with soft cool food, but they must not be chewed.

Interaction

Antibiotics (Quinolone antibiotics)Interaction Rating: Moderate Be cautious with this combination.Talk with your health provider.

Iron might decrease how much antibiotic the body absorbs. Taking iron along with some antibiotics might decrease the effectiveness of these antibiotics. To avoid this interaction take iron two hours before or two hours after taking antibiotics.

Some of these antibiotics that might interact with iron include ciprofloxacin (Cipro), enoxacin (Penetrex), norfloxacin (Chibroxin, Noroxin), sparfloxacin (Zagam), trovafloxacin (Trovan), and grepafloxacin (Raxar).

Contraindications

Do not use in patients who are hypersensitive to the product's components or who have iron excess.

Side Effects

Dark stools are common with iron therapy, as are nausea and other gastrointestinal irritation symptoms such as anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, and diarrhoea. Zinc may also cause gastrointestinal distress. These timed-release pills are intended to decrease stomach discomfort. Allergic responses have been reported seldom.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Any medication should be avoided if feasible during the first trimester of pregnancy. Thus, administration of iron during the first trimester necessitates definite proof of iron deficiency, whereas insufficient nutrition necessitates supplemental Zinc and Folic acid during the balance of the pregnancy.

Precautions & Warnings

Patients at risk of iron overload, such as those with haemochromatosis, hemolytic anaemia, or red cell aplasia, should be monitored closely. Failure to react to therapy may indicate additional causes of anaemia, which should be explored further. Iron and zinc chelate with tetracycline, potentially impairing absorption of all three drugs. In the presence of iron, zinc absorption may be decreased. Iron absorption may be hampered by penicillamine and antacids. By spacing the administration of each product by several hours, such possible interactions can be minimised. Zinc buildup may occur in people with renal failure.
